Ripping across the finish line in first place, for the 13th time, Katie Compton is the 2017 Cyclocross National Champion!
The conditions were rough in Hartford, CT. Several days of rain leading up to the Championship heats, gave way to snow and ice, making an already technical course slick and unforgiving. “I just wanted to be as smooth as I could… On a couple sections, I wanted to go faster, but I also wanted to be careful and not crash.”
After falling into second on the steep Bonk Breaker run up during the first lap, Katie put on the gas about half way around the loop, taking first, and never looking back.
By her own admission, the number “13” did not hold any superstitious omens. “The whole lucky 13, I don’t really care…I think you make your own luck”, quipped Compton in a post race interview (video below).
Rolling on her custom Knight 35 tubular disc wheels, Katie held a lead of over 30 seconds for most of the race, but the punishing course didn’t let up. Coming in to the last lap a seemingly innocuous corner found her on the ground for a few seconds. Quickly up and rolling again, Compton pushed hard for the next lap, coming across the line with a huge smile, fist pumping the sky and a roaring crowd.
In the after-race interview, she encouraged more girls and women to get in to bicycling. “I hope I’m getting girls on bikes and women on bikes. It’s a great lifestyle choice,” said Compton. “It’s healthy, it’s fun, it’s a great environment, great people, so, the more people on bikes the better.”
Congrats (again) Katie! You’re one in a million.
